It is Blogger Action Day Sunday 16 October 2011.

A time when bloggers unite in speaking out to to raise awareness of events affecting people across the world.

This years theme is #Food.

Food for thought. Do I eat to live or Live to eat.

The UK Government, has proposed the raising of the Recommended Daily Calorie Intake (RDCI) for men and women.
This is its strategy to tackle rising obesity across the UK population of 62,435,709 people, which equals 9% of the worlds population.

Population figures estimated 01.01.11 from Wikipedia ,also giving the worlds population figures as 6,968,000000.

Looking at our own individual life style, one wonders what % of the Uk population will take heed of the proposed changes in the RDCI, or even the RDCI its self.

In a year we celebrate:

New Year. Mother's Day. Easter. May day Bank Holiday. Father's Day. Spring Bank Holiday. Summer Bank Holiday. Christmas Day. Boxing Day.

Let us not forget, Birthdays. Christenings. Weddings. Anniversaries. New Job. New Home. Confirmation. Qualifications gained. Promotions. Retirements.

There are probably more celebratory events that you can name. This is just a few, to draw to your attention to the fact that in a single year we consume copious amounts of food and beverages which are well above the RDCI.

Food Retailers are there to help us. They ensure that plenty of festive products are available to shoppers, months before, during and after the celebration period.

Thought For Food

I ask you though, to reflect upon how other people in the world are living.

No Government raises the RDCI in Somalia, Africa or Ethiopia.

The New York Times printed an article on Monday 10 October 2011

The United Nations (UN) announced that Somalia's famine had spread to a sixth area within the country, with officials warning that 750,000 people could die in the next few months, unless Aid efforts were stepped up.

It is estimated that up to 4,000000 Somalis, more than half of the population, have been pushed into "crisis"by drought, war, restrictions on Aid Groups,and years of chaos.

While The Citizen.co.TZ printed an article on Thursday 13 October 2011.

It is estimated that 7,200 tonnes of cereals will be needed to feed people living in the Ngorongora Conservation area, this cereal is expected to last them until April 2012.
The crisis is due to the area being prone to drought such as in the years 2005/06. 2008/09. and now 2011.The area has livestock farming, however with no grain and drought conditions,the livestock too are suffering.

There are many ways one can help. Donations to any Aid groups will be welcome or perhaps a donation to water holes.

The Illustrated book of Patriotism, by George Courtauld.
It is an amazing book which is giving him hours of pleasure.

We had Dancin over on Tuesday with the pups.
There were plenty of hugs and many smiles with the pairs antics.
Thanks Dancin and thanks to Buddy and Roxie for such fun.
This is Wednesday morning, when the pup mobile was being loaded.

Its Mums Day and I have been spoilt a great deal. Mac's niece and Dancin have made sure of that. Not to leave our grandson out, he also sends me lovely gifts. I also got a surprise Amazon gift voucher, from Dancin, so will be looking at what reading delights I can purchase. My love and Thanks to such wonderful daughters and grandson.

Tattershall Castle

Tattershall Castle built in the 1400s by Ralph Cromwell.
Six stories high with 150 steps from the basement to the battlements.Originally there were spires on the towers.

A mere shadow of the original.

These structures based in the moat, were used by the kitchen staff. Possibly to keep fish alive until needed.

Fifth floor and battlements.
The centre of each of the the steps leading to the top of the castle were patch repaired,
due to the heavy wear over the years.
The stone hand rail showed signs of use, retaining a shine through the many hands which slid over it.

There was no mention about this structure. Although I have seen other castles reports, indicating a cold store, which look similar.

What a wonderful way to start my day

Thank you so much for spoiling me Mac's niece.
I woke to receive a large bouquet box this morning. Inside are these wonderful flowers.
If you look well viewers, in picture four here, you will see Mac's niece at graduation.

The flowers are a thank you for the knitting and sewing I do for fund raising and they are lovely.
May mothers the world over be as blessed as I am.

While I thank my lucky stars that the snow has missed us, this time.
Thoughts are being given to all of the people who's lives are being made difficult by it.
We do have exceptionally cold weather it was -7 at lunch time and is now dropping fast.
The pine tree looked very pleasing, rimmed over with frost and I thought I would share it with you.

St Denys Church and copy

Hi well Sensory Dragon asked to see the church, so I popped down to town and took a couple of pictures of the original.
The last one is the copy. Three feet by four feet long.
It is a wooden model frame, with the knitted church covering it.
There are another four to make so I will keep you informed about them.

Saying it with Flowers

Today is the day that the knitted St Denys Church, is to be handed over to the vicar of the originl St Denys Church in Sleaford, in time for the Christmas services.

All of us who had worked on the church, met at The Hub and were delighted to be invited to a lunch by the ArtsNK staff.

Thank you ArtsNK.

Its was followed by a photo shoot by the local press.

It was nice to join together again with group members Marion, Val, Pat, Sheila, Audrey and Dawn, this time without the stress of deadlines.

I was very surprised after the photos had been taken,
to be presented with the lovely flowers you see above and a thank you card signed by all group members, for
joining them and assisting in the completion of the project.

My thanks to you ladies for the gift and the opportunity to become involved in your project.

The Sun Will Come Out

Having shared the cold and winter's weather with you yesterday,
I thought that you may like to see today's change.
Unbroken blue sky, which was very welcome, and wonderful sunshine.

For the first time since it started, the Lincoln Christmas Market has been unable to open,
due to weather conditions.
Nice to be sat indoors looking out.

St Denys Church

The church has resided at my home for two weeks, for me to finish off the windows towers and buttresses.
It is now done and on Friday it was returned to the ArtNK studio.
As with all larger projects, there is a feeling of anticlimax when the task is finished.
I had put tasks aside to complete this so its just a matter of getting back in gear.

Lake District tree changing direction

We spent a week in the lake district.
It is reputed to be the wettest place in England, and was while we were there.
This tree caught my attention, so camera to the ready I took a few shots.
Seeing the wonderful views in that part of the country, even in bad weather conditions ,while in a car.
Has not stopped me wanting to return there.

How this half of the Industrial World live

The pictures shown above (click on the pictures to enlarge) show a very small proportion of the abundance of water in parts of Europe.
While some of this water is being stored for Industry, consumption and irrigation.
Much of it is considered a leisure facility.

Vast quantities are used for Aquariums centres, Water Theme Parks, to Water Features and Swimming pools.
Irrigation of Golf Clubs and Private lands held by Stately Home owners.

Here in the UK, animal owners are breaking the law, if their animals are not provided with fresh and adequate drinking water.
I am amongst those who check that the garden birds have fresh drinking and bathing water each day and more checks on it in the summer, when they have higher needs for their young.

The other half of the World though do not have the means to slake their thirst, let alone even consider this style of water abuse, that is happening all the time in this part of the world.

Is out of Sight out of Mind

There are nearly one billion people who lack access to clean water, in the developing world.

There is a belief that the earth contains a specific amount of fresh water.
This is being used and abused never to be replenished.

Are we too, to join the above deprived people eventually.
Quite a mind provoking thought.
Conservation starts at home.

Today the plight of the developing world is being brought to your attention.
Please act now. Remember There but for the grace of God go I.

It is never too late to help others, nor is your offer too small.

It was hard to restrict myself as music is so much part of me, it is balanced with some good belters to get rid of any angst I may be feeling at any time.

3 A smell, well a Lemon its clean, astringent and awakening, so useful too.

4 A bird !!!!!!! A Humming Bird small agile and colourful.

5 I am not given to strong feeling of dislike. However, I feel that between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown they have done a lot of damage, which the repercussions are to be felt and delt with by the public, for a long time. Can I have a case of the runs and poo on both of their heads.

6 Food cravings. A toss up between Cheese and Fish.
Cheese since I was a child and fish latterly oh and Marmite. If you too like these, then cream cheese and Marmite sandwiches are lovely.

7 Favourite time of the year. SPRING, emerging from the winter with its unclothed fields and trees.
I suffer what the old folk call the green sickness. I must see green in winter it goes with being a Libra .

8 Favourite time of the day. Early morning, watching the sun rise and burn off the mist.

9 If a change is as good as a rest.
Well I would choose the change, as this would indicate that I had already done something or been some where. I would want to extend the enjoyment for as long as I could.

10 My guests at my dinner party would include:

Kaffe Fassett because of my love of crochet and knitting and now design.

St Denys Outing

I mentioned about St Denys Church having an outing to Mablethorpe last weekend.
Well what a wonderful experience it was.
The church was displayed at the Bathing Belles beach huts and received a good amount of interest from the public, whilst the event was not intended to be a fund raiser,it raised nearly £50.00.
This money has been sent to Help The Hero's Fund.
A local clergy person took inspiration from the project and is weaving it into his sermon this week.
Another person offered to buy the Church for £500. even in its uncompleted state.

A compliment indeed.

The people involved in this project produce craft exhibits for Arts NK.
Visual Arts in North Kesteven.

There are many groups of individuals, all ages and walks of life, who are committed to the huge umbrella of Arts and Crafts.

The Nettles a nature area in Sleaford is part of their on going work.

The Knitting group, which I attend, knits huge projects which travel around the country.
A knitted shed and garden surrounding it complete with fencing, is just one.

The swimming pool another and as you will have gathered St Denys Church.

Last week, ArtNK hosted a meeting to discuss local involvement with Cultural Olympiad, which is taking place in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland during 2011.
Not for profit organisations can apply to run programmes events or activities through The Inspire Programme. contact Paul Brookes-paul.brookes@artscouncil.org.uk

Some of the suggestions raised were, for each village to compose a new carol, flags to be designed and flown for the occasion, Church and Hand bell ringing, Mosaic work, Sculptures in various mediums and Knitting projects for the occasion.

The meeting hi lighted Arts projects completed in the county, for the Queen's Silver Jubilee and the Millennium.
A smile was raised when one project was shown. It had started out as a mosaic of moderate dimensions and now is almost 30 feet long by 6 high. We all love our chosen Arts.
Many of the works have become an Arts Trail, visit Nocton and you will get to see how The Saphire Festival arts are projected into the community.
In Baxindale a working Sundial sculpture is on display.

There is enjoyment when travelling throughout Counties, you come across a sculpture or art project on view. Well there are also volunteers engaged in bringing this pleasure to you.
Why not join them.

Stone work for the Church with a charity bear

The Church is growing and each week when we meet,
to attach all the bits made, we are pleased to see it morphing.

It started its touring this weekend.
Travelling to Mablethorpe,
for any residents to look at and discuss forming their own group,
to start the second Church in the project.

As you recall I collect Delft Wear houses and which in their display,
look like a street in Amsterdam.
I have a vision of the Churches side by side in all their glory.
It will be quite spectacular.

Silverstone Experience

Dancin' from over at In the Pink, treated Lord L, otherwise known as my other half,
to a driving experience day for Fathers Day.

On the 9 September we travelled to Silverstone race course, for him to experience driving
an Aston Martin, on this wonderful track.
As you can see the weather was very kind to us all.
It was a surprise to see the number on his car, although this made it all the more memorable.

It was a wonderful time for us all. Huge smiles of enjoyment by everyone.
After we stopped to have a break in the restaurant and would you believe it, the heavens opened with vengeance.

Sutton Bonington Show

Sunday was the day the public could attend the Sutton Bonington show in Leicestershire, the local events having already been held on Saturday.
We travelled to the venue, to join both of our daughters and our eight year old grandson.
It was packed with revellers, who had either children or dogs or both in tow.
The many and mixed smells of cooking wafted about the large field, which was set out with many craft exhibit tents, side shows, various activities, birds of prey, bee keeping, hen coops, garden nurseries, tombola, cake stalls, Ferret runs, calf's, sheep, archery, mini golf, to name but a few.
The central arena continually changed, as log chopping events gave way to various breeds of different animals on show.
I never heard a cross word in the 31/2 hours we were there, evidence of the good time being had by everyone.
We had taken a picnic lunch and found a quiet spot near by to enjoy our break.
Dancin' from over at In the Pink, ( blog site in my side bar on the right) was the only one to remember to take photos.
I will have to refer you to her site to do the show its full justice, as a very memorable day out.
Next years event will be on September 4 2011. If you are looking for a good fun day out, I can assure you this will be the place where you will find it.

Persian Slippers

And here is a pair I made earlier.

I was at a loss of what to do while waiting for an appointment on Wednesday, so started these slippers. They are made in double strands of four ply cotton and
are run up quickly.
I am sure they will serve someone well.
A friend in the village has asked for a pair, for when they are on holiday. Easy to pack, light and washable.

Then while hunting through one of my pattern stores yesterday, looking for 40s jumpers and children's jumper patterns for a friend.
I found several patterns that I had been meaning to make. A small pile has joined the Christmas cards waiting to be made.

Never idle hands here.

Woolly Spires

I mentioned on my blog about St Denys Church having solar panels fitted,
to reduce its Carbon Footprint.

Well in Sleaford a small group of volunteers are part of an Arts project,
I am one of them, and we are knitting a model of the church.
Its three feet high.

If you look on facebook under Woolly Spires,
you will see what is being made.

Here picture one is the knitted solar panel awaiting placement.
Click on the picture to enlarge it.
Underneath are two of the roof towers, also the gate way to the side porch of the church.
I understand that the homeless used to sleep out in this porch.
They have had accommodation found.
The space has since been closed in and taken into the church.

Next are two of the three belfry window panels.
The third is already made and fitted.

There are six doors to the church. The main one is again already fitted.
These are the remaining five.
There are wonderful stonework panels about the roof and crenelations.
I have started these and am waiting for group agreement as
to which should be used.

When the church is completed it will travel the county.
Another four churches are planned to be knitted from various points of Lincolnshire.

Eventually the five churches will be displayed in The Usher Gallery In Lincoln.

Mini Cooper Sport Driving Experience

In March I received a mum's day gift of a Driving Experience in a Mini Cooper Sport,
from Dancin' over at In the Pink.

On Saturday 21 August a warm and overcast day,
Dancin' took me and my family, to Rockingham in Corby, Northampton, where I took the experience.
What a thrilling day it was.

I was amongst a huge group of people taking part in various driving experiences.
In the above pictures, three of which contain the Mini Cooper Sport that I was driving,
you will see some of the other vehicles.

The time passed quickly but is still clear in my mind. I did not mind moving aside for a Lamborghini and a Ferrari.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, and am still walking about with a huge smile on my face.
Thank You Dancin'.
I can not think of anything which will beat that experience.

What a lovely weekend.
We shared it with Dancin' at "In the Pink", Mr Dancin' and the pups.
More about the weekend tomorrow, when I will post some pictures.
I was so pleased that Dancin' could show me how to change the layout design on my blog.
I like Acer's and have several in the garden, so this design seemed appropriate.

Navigation Wharf Mooring.

A while back I mentioned the Swing Bridge, picture three,being built across the River Slea.
The rational was that river visitors could travel near to the town, moor and enjoy a break, while shopping.
Since then funds have been applied for and a slip way and mooring point, built for Canal boats.
There is no access to this area by river yet.
It would be lovely to think that this could be accomplished, in the future though.
In the mean time what a lovely place to set a floating eating house.
There is a public house near by called the Barge and Bottle.
Enough said perfect.

Riverside Walking

It is so sunny and hot we decided that a walk by the river would be cooling.
We were not alone as many dog lovers take their pets down to cool off.
These pictures show other reasons to enjoy the walk.
A Mallard taking in the sun.
A tree fallen, which has received a helping hand to thrive in The Nettles.
'The Nettles' nature reserve, which has a team of craft's people who make the thickets
and voluntees who help to keep the area clear of wind strewn rubbish.
May I thank MissM for alerting me to my mistake in naming this area Lollycocks field.
A Moorhen, starting to build her nest.
There a plenty of fish in the river which shows good water quality.
We did see a 12 inch trout,although most other visible fish were no biger
than 6 or 7 inches.

At Christmas we received membership to the National Trust as a gift from Dancin' Fool, In The Pink.
Thank you Dancin' and today we visited Belton House and gardens.
The first picture is of the first Earl Brownlow's Cript, outside the Norman church in the grounds of Belton House.
The second is the Hot House. What a conservatory it is.
It was a wonderful day. People and children were enjoying the many pleasures available to them, as were we.
It is too large to take in all that is on offer in one go, so we plan a return visit soon.

Safe to brave the weather

Down came the rain.
I do hope that the sun will shine, for longer than one day at a time.
By all accounts not this Bank holiday though.

Tree Peony

I have shown this plant on previous years, when it bloomed.
This year I place a rule above it, to show the size of the flowers.
They are eight inches across.

I have several of these trees in the garden. Although it take a few years for the plants to establish themselves enough to flower. I wait for the others to give so much pleasure.

Eden Project Cornwall

These are the Biospheres at Eden.
It takes many hours to get to see everything there.

This Junk Robot is just outside the spheres. He is made from recycled items discarded every day . Just click on the picture to see a close up.

The Mediterranean sphere was next amongst the grape vines, although you will find it very warm inside.

The last picture is of a spirit with some what a prickly nature.

We enjoyed a week in Devon and trips to Cornwall and Bodmin.
A lovely holiday.

Been together now for 43 years

And it don't seem a day too long.

How time passes, 43 years ago today and in similar weather conditions, we said I do and having tied the knot, set forth on a journey.What an astonishing trip we have had.
Two wonderful daughters and a loving grandson.
Two, plus two never to be forgotten, great dogs.
A great many lovely family and friends.
Its wonderful to look back through time, which seems so short and count our blessings.
Thank you to our daughters and grandson for making our life so full of everything worthwhile.
Thank you also to my other half who gets too little mention, for someone who is always there for me.

I have thought about why I lock myself into crochet, indeed craft projects so much.
I started knitting at 6 years old. My first work was originally pink wool, which soon turned to a grubby yellowy brown, as I frogged it and restarted my project.
I recall being frustrated that I could not work with two colours.
My mothers work was so nice.

While hands and fingers fly in intricate moves
the mind becomes still,the quiet it exudes.
The nearer tranquility I try to obtain,
a sound, banishes my solitude and at oneness again.

Mothers Day

A guest and pups arrived yesterday and hand delivered an early Mothers Day Gift, flowers and card.

What a surprise I had, when I early peeped at my gift.

I hold a dream to own a Mini Cooper.

My gift is A Mini Cooper S Thrill experience.
I get to drive some laps, in a reimagining of the 60s classic, on one of four circuits,
on a date of my choosing. Wow, I am longing to arrange the booking.

I feel like Nana in Aliens in the Attic, when a device held by the aliens turns Nana into a super-ninja.
I hope to do my image proud and manage a good speed.

This is the last piece of Lace for February.

It was designed by Miyoshi Kuroi
Various stitches have been altered to my own liking.

Materials: 200gms Crochet cotton No 20.
Crochet hook Number 1.25 UK size.
The making of this cloth was spread over three weeks,
because it requires concentration to detail.

This pattern will lend its self to clothing
and I hope to apply it to a project soon.

It is pressed here although looks very good unpressed.

Stoutshill Gloucestershire

Last week we took a break in Gloucestershire.

Our accommodation was at Stoutshill, Uley, near Stroud.
The first picture shows Stoutshill taken from the back of the building,
which dates back to the 1800s, and was owned by a large scale Wool Farmer.
His wool was processed, by some of the 11 mills in the area at that time.
Once processed it was spun to provide uniforms for the service people.
Red for the Army and Blue for the Navy.
There was a decline in wool manufacturing and eventually Stoutshill was sold.

This grand building of Cotswold stone, was converted in the 1900s to a boys Prep School.
History says that Stephen Fry and Captain Mark Phillips were borders here.
There are still Old Boys Open Days, which are well attended.
I am sure this is an indication that the school and staff were held in high regard by the boys.

We had two sunny days and the second picture is of the sunset on the second day.
Most welcome colours after the heavy frosts and freezing temperatures.
The third and sixth pictures are views from Uley of the countryside.
You can see over the River Seven and in clear conditions the Brecon Beacons.
Fourth is a village church with a very old Yew tree, nearby is a natural spring.
Fifth is the Village of Uley which nestles into the hills as do many villages in the area.

Having listened to many years of "wives tales" comments.
I came across this write up seasonal tips from elder garden statesmen.
Thanks to Michael Clark for these gems.

If a single man pulls up a sage bush from the garden at midnight on Christmas Eve, a storm will arise and the man's future wife will appear.

If the sun shines on Christmas day for however short a time the following year will be a good one for Fruit.

Never start anything in the garden on on December 28. Called "Dyzemass Day" it is considered very unlucky to do so on this day.

When a cat lies with its tail turned to the fire its a sign of hard weather to come and plants will need protection.

All evergreens used for Christmas decoration should be burnt on Candlemas Day and care that every holly berry is burnt, each berry missed means a token of bad luck.

Do not say you have not been warned.

The Church that is Shrinking their Carbon Footprint.

This is a picture of St Denys Church in Sleaford , taken from the third floor of the hub.
The reason you are seeing this view is because the church has had 54 Solar Photovoltaic panels installed on to the church roof.

If you click on the picture you can see the sunshine glinting on the panels, under the top eight arch windows, over the first roof.

The installation was not without difficulty as being a listed building, installation needed to meet several requirements. One of these was that the panels must not interfere or alter the church structure in any way or be visible from the ground.

This is the biggest installation on a church in the country and the first church in Lincolnshire to take this step in environmental concerns.
The aim is to reduce the locations carbon footprint by 40% by 2050 by using the created electricity to supply the National Grid.

Credit is given to the Curate Rev Cullimore who headed the campaign and applied for 95% external funding from two Grant Sources.
The total cost was £56,000.

A television visit has been made to record the project.
While a programme of Songs of Praise, recorded in St Denys church,led by Aled Jones will be broad caste on 30 August to mark this occasion.

Good evening everyone.

A while ago I showed you our church surrounded and supported by scaffolding, due to the
damage to the spire in the quake we experienced.

The vane was taken to be re gilded while the spires repairs were being made and then into the local junior
school so that all the children could jump over it.
A tale to tell their own children, that they had jumped over the church vane.
Each child was assisted to jump by two teachers, while a third held the vane to the school floor.
The repairs have now been completed and Lord L ,(my other half) took the above church photos for tonight post.

Today has been unusual weather wise, we started with brilliant sunshine, followed by heavy rain, then back to the
sunshine, then rain and hail stones. No matter as you can see we are left with lovely skies this evening.

Red Sky at night sailors delight.

Lower left is the sun set on Wednesday night.

Today Thursday has been so nice, we travelled to Heckington to see one of the few remaining eight sailed windmills, in Lincolnshire.
It is a Tower Mill dated to 1830, see top left picture and lower right, to designs by Michael Ingeldew.
It was repaired in 1890 and ceased working in 1942. A huge amount of money has been spent bringing it to the standard
you see today. It is a tourist centre and part of the Heritage trail.

Top right is a cloud over our home later this evening.

Welcome to the City of Lincoln.

We went to Lincoln to see what the Cathedral would look like, second top right picture,
to the left in the same picture with the square rampart is Lincoln Castle.

The first picture is of The Glory Hole, a bridge spanning the river, which leads to
Brayford Wharf in the city its self.
The Tudor fronted shop, which dates back years is The Old Coffee shop.
In winter its lovely to walk past when the coffee beans are being roasted.
A requirement is a detour in for a cuppa.

The day started sunny and clear. Two hours later there was a marked change and
I took the cloud shots.
There was a small shower enough to use you car wipers to clear the
screen then it was over, for us at least.

On Monday

The day started fine with wispy clouds in a bright blue sky.
However in the space of one hour clouds started rolling in, travelling south easterly.

I expected the works, rain, hail, thunder and lightening. (smog, family joke from Bugs Bunny Does Opera)
The sky though, while showing its potential just moved on to another part of the country.
It was still a sight to see.

Under false pretences.

The weather here for the last week has been lovely, dry and hot with clear blue skies.

Scotland.

Same holiday as last week.

When we first started visiting Perthshire, the trees in the garden of third picture top right, were only saplings.
The property owner used to leave the front door open on mild evenings and the light from the house shone down
the garden where the sheep grazed.
The sheep are no longer in sight and the garden has matured considerably.
It is one of my favourite views.

These are general photos of Lock Tay, taken by Lord L ( also known as my other half )
The Ram stood like this for about 3 minutes. Bet there is a fair amount of wool waiting to be gathered on him.
We both enjoy holidaying in this part of Scotland. I read a report that life expectancy is longer in Scotland.
Not surprising when there is so much wonderful scenery and fresh air.

We visited again last week to find the Health and Safty team had chosen their cuts.
I wondered just how long it had taken those branches to grow.
On a positve note however there is an increase in regeneration of trees in the area.

Time flies, not as quickly as these clouds though.
This was the sunset over home last Monday.

In the Sunday Telegraph May 31, there were newly published pictures of spectacular skies,
visit telegraph.co.uk/pictures.

The Science Correspondent Richard Gray, I quote, wrote about the apparent discovery of a previously
undocumented phenomenon.
An unusual storm formation spotted across the world by a collection of enthusiastic amateurs
could be the first new cloud type officially identified in more than half a century.

It was noticed only because of the efforts of the Cloud Appreciation Society,
whose Cloudspotter's Guide became a surprise bestseller three years ago.
Forming a dark lumpy blanket across the sky, the cloud form has been sighted above the Scottish
Highlands and Snowdonia in Wales, on the American prairies, over the mountains of New Zealand
and the Arctic seas off Greenland.

"Its a bit like looking at the surface of a choppy sea from below," said Gavin Pretor-Pinney, founder of
the society.
He first identified the cloud, named "asperatus"from the Latin for rough, from photographs that
were being sent in by society members.
"We try to identify and classify all the images of clouds we get in, but there were some that just didn't
seem to fit in any of the other categories, so I began to think it might be a unique type of cloud" he said.

Experts at the Royal Meteorological Society are now attempting to have the aspertus officially added to the
International Cloud Atlas,the recognised system of names used by forecasters to identify clouds.
If they succeed, it will be the first new variety classified since 1953.

Hanmer Springs in New Zealand, Schiehallion in Perthshire Scotland and Cedar Rapids,Iowa USA.

It seems like five minutes since I last joined all the participants posting for Sky Watch.

These are the afternoon skies over Lincolnshire today.
First view is the river Slea which is all shades of green .
Just in case you did not recognise the view, its just out side my bowls club.
It has been warm and sunny with lots of clouds racing past today.
The second picture is the swing bridge which I included, as is was raised for maintenance work today.
I understand that the drive is on to prepare the river to accept canal boats.

Today's sky watch comes from my guest Lord L and his memories of a photographic Safari he took, while living in Kenya.

Mount Kilimanjaro lies in the borders of Tanzania and eastern Africa, with Kenya to the North.

The Mount consists of consists of three inactive volcanic cones ( peaks) rising to 15100 feet, above the
plains of the Serengeti.

In the foreground are Thompson's gazelle.

In 2007 is was noted that the Ice glaciers which cap Mount Kilimanjaro were slowly retreating due
to a reduction in snow fall.

For once global warming was not attributed as the cause.

Skies while Traveling about my County.

It is worth while clicking on the picture to enlarge it.

1) Royal Air Force Officer Training Flying School at Cranwell. Hangers and airfields.
Prince's Charles and William trained to fly here.

2 and 3) Crows queue up to mob gardens for bird food. Bowledover's birds diner
had just opened.

4 and 6) Oil Seed Rape crops in the Lincoln City environs. The county is full of this crop.
Some times Flax is grown in the fields next to the Rape.
As Flax has a wonderful blue flower , the contrast is lovely and cooling against the
fierce yellow of rape.

5) Apple Blossom. The birds raid this tree and some times I see them staggering around
as the fermented apple catches up with them.

The first four of tonight's pictures were taken in Felixstowe, Suffolk on Sunday.

Martello Tower
There were more than a 100 Martello Towers built along England's
South and Eastern coast line in the early 19 century, as defence against the
Napoleonic War,only 40 remain.
This one is used for safety observations on sea and beach.
In December 2002 one such tower in Felixstowe, went on the market for £500,000.
Having been sold it has been converted over a three year period, into a luxury home.

The next three pictures are of Felixtowe Docks.
Huge container ships come in from all over the world, either to be loaded or unloaded.
It is a work of art in unloading them.
High stacks of the containers are standing about the dock yards awaiting dispatch.

The last two pictures are of Culverthorpe lakes a popular walking place near where I live.

I am surprised that I am at number 30 in Sky Watch Friday.
Time flies when you are enjoying yourself.
Here are two sun sets taken today at 7.00pm.
We have birds using the garden and some become quite tame.
This is one of the blackbirds, in the plum tree.
In the late afternoon he sits in the apple tree, just behind the plum tree and sings.
I could not resist some flowers.

How time flies. Good evening everyone.
You will see in the above pictures that we went to the Lincolnshire East Coast for a day yesterday.
It was sunny ,with a cold wind blowing.
Alford Mill is a working five sail mill, their very good products can be bought on line.
Grandson was introduced to speed, I think he will want more of this pursuit.
Mablethorpe beach, the sea was reminiscent of Newcastle brown ale,
as the winds and approaching full moon stirred up the sea.
Star Fish high and dry.
The fields are again being clothed in Lincoln Green.
Lord L, daughter and grandson make their way back home from the beach.
Sand dunes.
Rescued seals at the Mablethorpe Sea Life Sanctuary.

We had a lovely day out.

The sun deserted us today and we had threatening weather.
These pictures were taken while I dodged outbreaks of rain.

The first is Hanley Monument, dedicated to a local, influential family many years ago.

The second is a town residence with a retail business on the ground floor.
Can you see the terracotta dragon on the roof apex.

The last you have seen before. It is the Mill in Moneys Yard, and marks the centre of town.

Harmony Day

In Australia on Saturday 21 March, the first day of Spring is observed as Harmony Day.

Slogan for the day is, Everyone Belongs.

It is a day to celebrate harmony among people of all cultures, races and religions.

Bobbie brought this day to my attention and such a worthy day I feel should be brought to the attention of as many people as possible.

Please pass the word about Harmony Day as far and as wide as you can. Thank you.

Sky Watch Friday 26

1.2.3.12) I wanted to show you that Spring is here at last, the ducklings are out on the river. When they flap
their tiny wings to catch up with the clutch, they appear to be running on the water surface.

4) The Swing bridge opened while we were on holiday.On the top right of the bridge is a counter balance,
for when the bridge is lifted from left to right. I am glad to say the ducks have returned to that part of the
river, after the closure for the bridge installation.

5.6) Flowers are appearing everywhere.

7. 10) Remember the rooks nests I mentioned a while back. To see how high they have built click on the picture.
A good summer is on its way, I am sure.

8.9) Our Church steeple was damaged in the earthquake last year. The top three sections have been removed for
repairs to be made. The weather vane has been taken to the village school for the children to jump over, this is said
to bring good fortune.

11) An apple tree in flower.

It happened too quickly for me to capture today, however, a skein of Canada Geese flew over our home, honking as they
made their way to Lincoln.

As you will see we were on holiday last week chasing the sun in Tenerife.

1) Bourganvilea. England's sad winter had left us deprived of colour and this wonderful show was lovely.

2,10) Teide, the volcano on the island. A official permit is needed to travel to the very top, saying you are fit and
without health problems.There is a cable car which ascends to the flattish area just below the cone.
3, 4, 11, 12) The Original Crater Walls, the clouds banked and then fell over the crater walls, it was lovely to watch.

5)An un erupted volcano core, solid magma.There is a lot of Obsidian,a semi precious stone which is used
for making jewelery.

6) Man sleeping with mouth open. Can you see him? Its a talking point on the island.

7) Still Seas at evening time.

8) Gomera, under cloud cover, although visible on clear days.

9) This villa, is reported to have been given to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who had been
making a film on the island. It was given as a gift by the Tenerife Government.
I understand that it has been returned to the Government and is a heritage place now.

On the smooth rocks below the villa, Ti Che classes are held daily. Half the class wear black outfits
and the other wear red.
It is mesmerising to watch groups of people moving in quiet peaceful unison.

13) The Finger of God. It is a weathered rock which has poetical licence in naming.

14) Red Rock a land mark, the airport runs between it and the foreground.

15) Bear rock, change the spelling and it it is both. Weather erosion again.

I have been off line for a time, while I am not sure what caused the problem.

At the end of last week, we had a lovely show of colour for a sun set. Lord L took these pictures.

Lord L's birthday.

Lord L had a landmark birthday this month.
Everyone spoiled him, rightly so.

For Lord L's birthday, Mac's Niece and our grandson came over for the day. Besides having a wonderful meal ( a requirement in this family for a get together) He received with other gifts two tickets to see Madam Butterfly showing in Leicester next month and this will be followed by another family get together. It was a lovely day.

I think the second ticket is for me. I wait with baited breath.

Dancin' and her guy came over for a stay with the pups, with more wonderful gifts and of course a big hug. A wonderful meal and equally wonderful evening was had by all.

I have to wonder if I also had a second birthday as I was spoilt with gifts.

I do not know if telling family that you love and appreciate them, is enough for them to know just how much you mean it.
Appreciation of time, given by working members of the family.
Time management for those with other family commitments.
Loving us enough to make such lovely surprises also.

May I say here and now THANK YOU and we love and appreciate you all.

Meet Wall.e
I saw this toy pre Christmas and thought that he would
become a popular gift.
That is in fact so he was a top seller.
He was given to me by dancin' over at In the Pink.
Last weekend dancin and her guy, brought the DVD over
for us to watch.
What a great film full of morals, with the right amount of humor too.
If you have not seen the film already then I can recommend it to you.

Sky Watch Friday 21

Its been a dull, cold and wet two week period and I have been at a loss as to skies to post for SWF.

Lord L and I went to town today and stopped by Cogglesford Water Mill.
Lord Ls pictures are on the left and mine on the right.
The Mill is no longer used for its original purpose, however it is now a popular restaurant.

Top. First left is the back of the Mill.
Second middle is the top lake feeding the mill race.
Third right is the tilt gate over the race.

Middle . First is the front aspect of the Mill.
Next is the Swing Bridge over the river Slea ,that I spoke of two weeks ago.
It is not completed yet.

Lower . First is a close up picture of the back of the Mill.
Second is looking into the boiling water of the race.
You can see a small shaft of sun light on the wall.

We walk along the river side now and then, there is certainly one Kingfisher,
who patrols a stretch of the river close to the Mill.

Sky Watch Friday 20

Skies over Lincolnshire

In the top centre picture is a swing bridge being installed over the River Slea, with the Mill in Moneys Yard,which marks the centre of town, behind it.

The bridge is being installed to permit canal boats access near to the centre of town, which would increase tourism.
It has been over six weeks in progress and is more than two weeks over its projected completion date.

We do not have canal boats using the shallow and narrow Slea, although there has been considerable canal restoration
work done else where in the county, to provide river travel and scenic walks between Lincoln and Boston.

The ducks are suffering as they are restricted to the lower end of the river and away from the pedestrians who would normally feed them daily.
Following Lord L and my game of bowls today, we went and fed the ducks, Moor Hens and any other hungry birds.
our pictures show eager ducks.
The skies over our town did not lend themselves to photography earlier in the day,
then everything started to happen at 2.30pm.

Sky Watch Friday 19

Hi everyone Happy NewYear to you all.
I went walk about on Tuesday,
(I can hear some people from Australia wincing at the term walk about, in the size of village that I live in.)
Any way the centre picture is of the moon rising at 3.00pm and -2 degrees, followed by the two of rooks nests, the rooks were gathering twigs and repairing the nests.
An old folk lore is, that the higher the nests are in the trees, is a omen of good weather to come.
If the nests are lower in the trees, then the birds know it will be windy and therefore protect their young in the lower branches which have the strength of the tree.

Please may this be true, this year according to my pictures.
The last four pictures are various stages of the sun setting from 3.30pm until 4.30pm.

Last Crafts of 2008

In my rush to finish gifts , I failed to take pictures of three lace items which have already gone out.
Two were 12 " lace mats with a bath bomb (bath smellies) tied in the centre, raffle prizes for the bowls club.
The third is a24" table centre lace cloth, for a friend who I play bowls with.

I made two of these Christmas rings, as a small broach type decoration for Christmas.

Next is a birthday present from my eldest daughter, A Knitting Mill.
Instead of working for hours with French Knitting, using a dolly peg.
Just thread up the mill and wind the handle which operates the four hooks.
I made 11 yards of knitting in twenty minutes.

The end product will be the interwoven shoulder strap for a bag made for a friend.

What wonderful weather we are having, it is approximatly 10 degrees, very mild and lots of sunny spells.

Sky Watch Friday 18

The Bass Maltings.

These historical structures, The Bass Maltings, were built in the early 20th century and
replaced several small malt houses in the area.
It was used for six decades to turn grain into malt for the production of beer.

The eight enormous buildings- each identical and known as pavillions- covered an area the
size of six football pitches, and can be seen for miles in the county. Three of them have been
badly damaged by fire.

The rural area was ideal for growing Barley Malt.
This when ready was harvested and transferred to the maltings which then started the three
key stages in the production of making beer.

Steeping stage: which involves soaking the malt in water and took about two days to complete,
increasing the water content of the barley kernels from approximately 10% to 50%, stimulating
the metabolic process.

Germination stage: when strict humidity and temperature controls are used to breaks down the starches
into simple sugars, this took four to five days processing.

Kilning stage: which is drying the malt to about 4% moisture to prevent the loss of the sugars, it is at
this stage that the colour and flavour of the final brew is determined.

The workers as well as their wages each received three free pints a day.

The maltings struggled to remain open through the second world war, eventually closing as a maltings in 1960.

Some of the buildings were being used in the 1980s for processing vegetables, prior to pickling, or freezing.

Though they have fallen into disrepair over time.

HRH The Prince of Wales supports restoration efforts through The Phoenix Trust, of this site.
Possible facilities would be apartments, restaurants and a museum.

What strange weather we are having.
Mind it is the right way about.
Sunny and bright in the day time, freezing cold at night.

Rewards are, such lovely skies, taken by me, of Lollycocks field,
the river Slea flowing full and taken by me again,
Lord L's full moon with an aircraft to the left, which has a silver body with a red tail.
Who could ask for any thing more.

Birthday Gift

This is a 60 birthday gift for a friend, her birthday is on 25 December.
We discussed her having joint gifts, to mark both Christmas and her birthday, when she was a child. She tells me she did feel that she missed out.

Winter conditions have been here on and off over the last couple of weeks.

Dancin' Bedspread Completed

This is the second spread I have made in 13 months.
The first, a white one, was for Mac's niece, from Caged Minutes.
The second is a rich cream colour and is for Dancin' from In the Pink.

They are made as gifts, for having such lovely daughters.

When a large project is completed. I find that I am at odds with my self.
I have filled time making dolls clothes for a friends grand daughter, two Shaun The Sheep and
I have a lace cloth started for a friends 60 birthday.

I need something to get my teeth into though.

When the right thing comes along I will share it with you.
Mean while I will keep on making the Village people and the Boot Leg dolls.

November 11 and

2) This is a picture taken by me,
of the sun setting in the west,
again on 11 November.

3) Yes there is a full moon here rising in the east,
on the same day as the other two.
What a wonderful change in the weather since last week.
Perhaps we need the not so good weather, to remind us of just how good it can be.

It has been an overcast week here with lots of rain and I
could not think what to do to make a sky watch feature for tonight.

At 2.30 pm today, I went to the fourth floor outside gallery of the HUB, an exhibition centre
near where I live and found these three pictures. They show the sky as it has been.

The first is: Autumn colours, the willows in the background are opposite my bowls club.

The second is: The Mill, in Moneys Yard. Having been repaired it is now a restaurant.

The third is St Denys Church.

Sky Watch 11

This week we have had some wonderful days of blue skies and light fluffy clouds, which change at a moments notice.
Today though, while I was bowling, Lord L took these two pictures.
The first is Starlings take flight.
The second is just as the weather was changing and becoming threatening.
It is now bitterly cold.
